18 Sep Not a single hint of regret
In my last semester of high school a young lady did a presentation about a school in Denmark. She talked about her experience at the school and also about the school in general. I got so mesmerized by the presentation that I basically made the decision to attend that school then and there.
The school she presented was none other than Musik og Teaterhøjskolen. I made the final decision before I graduated to apply for the school and I don’t feel a hint of regret whatsoever.
Hi! I’m Xenia, a 19 year old girl from the Philippines that grew up in Iceland. I’ve been singing basically my whole life, but I actually never took any singing lessons before I started at this school. When I was about to graduate in spring 2019, I didn’t know what to do afterwards, but after the young lady presented this school I thought it was a great opportunity for me to finally try some singing lessons. Also because I didn’t have anything else planned.
One of my expectations of the school was that there would be quite a lot of socializing. I love socializing and getting to know new people so I was very excited about that. After being here for about a month and a half I can say that I underestimated just how much socializing there would be in this school. The social life is so active and so much more fun than I had ever imagined. For example we always have something to do together in the weekends, which is great after studying/practicing so much in the weekdays. You get so close with the other students so surprisingly fast and I think that’s because we know we’re all on the same boat. We all came here to develop our own skills and also to socialize. I can really feel the support everyone is giving to each other and also that there isn’t any competition. We know everyone comes from different backgrounds and have different levels of skill, but that’s also what makes it so great! Because of that, you’re not only learning from the teachers, but also from your fellow students. Everyone is so willing to help each other out whether it is to develop your skills or just something simple like making you feel better. I think that’s one of the reasons why I feel like this school is so welcoming and open to everyone.
If you’re worried about not being able to practice, because of the socializing, I can tell you that there’s not that much to worry about. You get a lot of free time to practice. It’s just your choice, how much of the free time you’re willing to use on practicing. I for example try to balance those aspects 50/50.
In this 1 month and 17 days I’ve been here it has been so unbelievably fun and exciting. I’ve been able to learn for example the piano, which I have been meaning to do for such a long time. I’ve gotten so close with my classmates that If I would tell my past self about it, I’d barely believe it myself. It has been such a great experience because I haven’t tried anything like this in Iceland. I’m extremely excited for what the next 3 and a half months holds for
my classmates and I.
