17 Apr Unique Opportunities
When I first came to Musik og Teaterhøjskolen, I didn’t have many expectations.
I knew I would be studying audio engineering, something I’m self taught with, so that was exciting. I knew I would have a great opportunity to improve my very minimal Danish language ability to a higher level. Additionally, I figured I would have the opportunity to meet some fellow young people, mostly Danes. And that’s it really it. I saw it as an opportunity to get better at music and really nothing more.
Having been here for four months now, I can say I definitely underestimated the level of community and social growth I would feel here. The program at the school is like nothing I’ve ever been a part of. The classes are structured and focused, taught by very knowledgeable professionals, but still free form enough to feel like you can shape your personal educational experience to get what you want out of it. Also, interspersed in the regular class schedule are these unique opportunities that I never thought I’d have. For instance, I recently arranged and performed the score for a musical performed by the class, I got to play an original co-written song with a classmate opening up for a popular Danish comedian, I did sound for a Danish pop band while they were tour, and many more unique experience builders that I never anticipated when I signed up for this school.
Something really positive I’ve seen here at the school, is that all the students are learning together and helping each other grow even after class. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been in the studio in the evening working on mixing or guitar, and one of my classmates comes in just to see what I’m up to. I end up having some sort of breakthrough with my recording software or the song that I’m working on, just because of that person’s input and fresh perspective. People come to the school with such different backgrounds and areas of expertise that you really feel like you can learn something from everyone. It’s a diverse, multi-talented, international and welcoming place to learn. At the school, there isn’t even a hint of competition, only camaraderie and support. People want to hear your talents out loud and boost you up and help you grow. They want to collaborate with you and utilize all that you have to offer to make something beautiful just for the sake of doing it. It’s a really special energy here that’s so constant everyday. We don’t have anything like this in the US, and it has been an incredible experience that I feel very fortunate to have been welcomed into.
I highly recommend attending a højskole to Americans and other internationals, who want to further explore a passion they have, and specifically Musik og Teaterhøjskolen in Toftlund, which has been my home for all of 2019 so far and has been a truly incredible experience.
